The Exodus Food Pantry (EFP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, proudly serving as a vital resource for Detroit families in need for over two decades. Located within Exodus Missionary Baptist Church, EFP was established by the pastor and members of the church to address the growing crisis of food insecurity in the community.
In 2000, Sherman Neal, a compassionate and dedicated church member, recognized a recurring need among low-income families who sought assistance for basic necessities, especially food. Inspired to make a lasting difference, Sherman partnered with Forgotten Harvest to launch the pantry with no budget but a clear mission—to fight hunger and provide stability for struggling families.
Although Sherman has since passed on, his legacy of service continues to inspire. Today, the Exodus Food Pantry operates as a beacon of hope for over 100 families each month, providing free groceries and demonstrating the power of neighbors helping neighbors. Staffed entirely by volunteers and guided by a committed board of directors, EFP remains dedicated to alleviating hunger and offering dignity and support to the community.
Sherman’s vision lives on through the countless lives touched by EFP—showing us that while one person can spark change, it is the collective efforts of a community that sustains it.
